Malaysian market
Since independence in 1957, Malaysia has grown from an economy that was agriculture and commodity-based to one that is now host to robust manufacturing and service sectors. It is one of the most open economies in the world, with a trade to GDP ratio averaging over 140% since 2010. Primary industries include electrical & electronics, petroleum & petrochemicals, palm oil & oleochemicals, semiconductors, pharmaceuticals, timber, rubber, and machinery.
In the 1st quarter of 2018, Malaysia’s economy grew by 5.4%, which was supported by steady domestic demand and private sector expenditure. The services sector expanded by 6.5% (particularly information and communications and finance/insurance) while the manufacturing sector grew 5.3% (E&E, petroleum, chemical, rubber and plastic products). Construction and agriculture also grew by 4.9% and 2.8% respectively. Since 2010, Malaysia’s economy has been averaging an annual growth rate of 5.4%. (Source: H20 Capital 2018)
