Dutch investment to more sustainable aquaculture farming in Indonesia

Since 2019, a partnership of Dutch companies active in the aquaculture sector named FishTechIndonesia, headed by Larive International, has been investing in Indonesia by establishing sustainable and innovative production systems and best practices locally. The FishTechIndonesia partnership cooperatives with and receives co-funding from the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Jakarta.

50 Tons of catfish per year and more

In Majalenka (West Java) a recirculation aquaculture system (RAS) farm for catfish cultivation with annual production capacity of 50 MT has been established at the premises of CV SUMMARINDO. In addition, a RAS farm for the cultivation of pangasius with annual production capacity of 30 MT has been established at the premises of PT Mitra Cahaya Mina in Tulungagung (East Java).

Indonesia is the largest economy in South East Asia with a relatively young, fast-growing and increasingly urban population of over 260 MN people. The country has tremendous potential to be a leading global seafood player and the Indonesian Ministry of Marine Affairs and Fisheries has the ambition to increase sustainable aquaculture production and reduce prices to make fish affordable for a larger part of the Indonesian population.

Dutch expertise for competitive and responsible aquaculture

The Netherlands is internationally renowned for its leading and innovative position in agro-food values chains, developing productive and sustainable production processes and creating added value. Policies & procedures applied in the Netherlands regarding efficiency, food quality, product safety and hygiene are considered as the highest international standards. The Dutch aquaculture sector (private sector, knowledge institutes and government bodies) has the ambition to contribute to a more competitive and responsible aquaculture sector in Indonesia. At the same time, Indonesia’s aquaculture sector offers vast business opportunities for Dutch companies.

The farms will act as demonstration facilities where fish farmers from both regions will be offered vocational training in the field of stocking, feeding, biosecurity and farm management. This will enable them to improve their yields and apply more sustainable farming methods (such as less water usage and reduction of antibiotics usage). In addition, the Dutch partners aim to improve access to markets by establishing partnerships with local retailers and wholesalers.

“The introduction of innovativation results in better performance and higher incomes”

Matthias Brienen, Director of Larive International: “Strengthening Indonesia’s aquaculture sector requires an increase in domestic productivity in an environmentally and socially responsible way. This can be realized via introducing technologies developed in the Netherlands (such as semi-closed and closed recirculation systems) which have been proven in other emerging markets, in combination with technical advice”.

Lambert Grijns, Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Indonesia: “The Dutch Embassy in Indonesia encourages Dutch companies to strengthen value chains in Indonesia,  notably in areas with a direct positive effect on  food security and by working together with local stakeholders. We are glad that via this public private partnership we have been able to contribute to a sector which is employing >1.6 MN people”.

Kay De Vreese, President Director of De Heus Indonesia: “Due to the growing population and increasing purchasing power, we are expecting a growth in the consumption of freshwater fish in Indonesia. The introducing of innovative cultivation systems for hatcheries, nurseries and grow-out farms combined with high-quality fish feed, will allow our customers to practice more sustainable and efficient production methods, resulting better technical performance and higher incomes”
