Boosting horticulture entrepreneurship in India

Participants from diverse backgrounds came together in Baramati, India, for the Horticulture Entrepreneurship Training Programme in the week of November 10, 2025. Over the course of five days, they completed a comprehensive training, equipping them with the skills and knowledge to thrive in horticulture entrepreneurship.

The training, as part of the PIB HortiRoad2India, took place at the Centre of Excellence (CoE) and KVK Baramati’s state-of-the-art facilities, which provided the perfect setting for theoretical learning and hands-on application.

What did the participants learn? The programme covered a wide range of topics, all designed to help participants become leaders in horticulture entrepreneurship:

  • Environmental analysis and market research to understand the risks and opportunities in high-tech horticulture.
  • Business strategy and value chain mapping for smarter, data-driven decisions.
  • Sustainability practices and food safety certifications like IndiaGAP and Global G.A.P.
  • Operational planning, focusing on efficient production, logistics and post-harvest management.
  • Financial management and risk mitigation strategies to ensure sustainable growth.

A standout feature of the training was the emphasis on collaboration. Participants were grouped into cross-disciplinary teams, creating an environment where farmers, government officials, students, and entrepreneurs could learn from each other’s experiences and perspectives. This diversity fuelled creativity and fostered innovative ideas for solving challenges in the horticulture sector.

The final pitch session was a key moment in which participants presented their business ideas to a jury of industry experts. This provided valuable feedback and an opportunity to refine their business strategies based on real-world input.
