Renewable energy training in Nigeria | A step towards sustainable innovation

In the fifth week of 2025, Lagos, Nigeria, a significant milestone in the RenewableTechNigeria partnership took place at the Lagos Energy Academy. This partnership brought together twenty carefully selected trainees from across the country, all with a solid foundation in renewable energy, installation, and engineering. These professionals, representing various companies and organisations, gathered with a shared vision—to advance their expertise and drive sustainable energy solutions forward.

A collaborative effort for a sustainable future

The training programme was designed by SEECE, the renewable energy department of HAN (Hogeschool van Arnhem en Nijmegen), ensuring a well-structured and impactful learning experience. The execution of the training was led by Peter van Zwol & Jose Carrasco Montejano from Independent Energy & Jan de Waard from Dawson Group, in close collaboration with Peter Ozah-Uweh from Rubitec, a key regional partner. This synergy between international expertise and local knowledge ensured that the programme was both globally informed and regionally relevant.

Key pillars of training

The comprehensive five-day training focused on three core areas:

  1. General engineering knowledge | Providing a solid technical foundation for trainees to understand the intricacies of renewable energy systems.
  2. Photovoltaic (PV) solar panels | Deep-diving into solar panel technology, installation, operation, and maintenance.
  3. Cold storage solutions | Exploring innovative approaches to refrigeration powered by renewable energy, a crucial aspect for agricultural and commercial sectors.

Additionally, the training integrated market and sales strategies, equipping participants not only with technical expertise but also with the business acumen needed to promote and implement these solutions effectively in their respective regions.

Introducing the ‘Solar-hybrid’ cooling system

One of the primary goals of the RenewableTechNigeria partnership is to showcase and deploy a mobile ‘solar-hybrid’ cooling system, designed to replace conventional fossil-fuel-powered refrigeration with clean and renewable energy sources. This system represents a significant step forward in sustainable cooling technology, particularly for regions where reliable refrigeration is essential for food preservation, pharmaceuticals, and agricultural productivity.

To ensure the successful implementation of this technology, the programme emphasized training local professionals in installation, operation, and maintenance. By equipping these individuals with hands-on knowledge and practical skills, the initiative ensures that the technology is not only adopted but also sustained over time.

Empowering local professionals: The key to sustainable impact

This training is more than just a skills development initiative—it is a strategic move towards making renewable energy solutions accessible and viable across Nigeria. The trainees, having gained in-depth knowledge of the solar-hybrid cooling system, are well-positioned to introduce and promote this technology within their communities. Whether as independent professionals or as part of larger organisations, they can install, maintain, and market the system, making it easier for businesses and individuals to transition to sustainable energy solutions.

By creating a nationwide network of trained professionals, the programme ensures that no matter where the system is deployed, there will always be qualified individuals available to support its operation. This approach not only facilitates a smooth market entry for the pilot system and the Dutch project partners but also strengthens the broader renewable energy sector by fostering local expertise and employment opportunities.

A win-win-win approach to renewable energy

This initiative represents a triple win for all stakeholders:

  • For the trainees | Gaining specialised knowledge and practical skills in a growing industry, increasing their employability and entrepreneurial opportunities.
  • For the market | Ensuring that businesses and individuals across Nigeria have access to innovative renewable energy solutions with local support for installation and maintenance.
  • For the environment | Reducing dependence on fossil fuels and promoting clean energy alternatives, contributing to Nigeria’s sustainable development goals.

Looking ahead: Expanding the impact

The success of this first training in Lagos sets the stage for further expansion. Future training programmes will build on this foundation, potentially increasing the number of trainees and broadening the scope of renewable energy solutions covered. As more professionals gain expertise, Nigeria moves closer to a future where renewable energy is not just an option but the norm.

By fostering technical skills, business development, and real-world applications, RenewableTechNigeria is assisting to reshape the renewable energy landscape in Nigeria—one trained professional at a time.
